Banri Kaieda is a politician who has served as a member of the Diet for around 30 years. Most recently, he served as Vice-Speaker of the House of Representatives for around three years. His electoral district is the one in the very central Tokyo.
His father was a newspaper reporter for a major newspaper company. He was born in Tokyo in 1949 and graduated from the Faculty of Law at Keio University. After graduating from university, he worked as a secretary to a member of the Diet and also worked as an economic commentator.
He was first elected in 1993. After that, when the Democratic Party of Japan, to which he belonged, became the ruling party, he served as Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry in 2011.
In 2012, he became the leader of the Democratic Party of Japan.
In 2021, he was appointed as Vice-Speaker of the House of Representatives.
He was re-elected in the 2024 House of Representatives election.
He is 182cm (5′ 10″) tall.
