Profile of Banri Kaieda
Banri Kaieda is a veteran member of Japan’s National Diet, with nearly 30 years of legislative experience. Most recently, he served as Vice-Speaker of the House of Representatives from 2021 to 2024. He represents a constituency located in the very center of Tokyo.
Born in Tokyo in 1949, Mr. Kaieda is the son of a journalist who worked for a major national newspaper. He graduated from the Faculty of Law at Keio University. After completing his studies, he began his political career as a secretary to a Diet member, and later worked as an economic commentator.
Mr. Kaieda was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1993. In 2011, during the administration of the Democratic Party of Japan, he was appointed Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry. He subsequently served as party leader in 2012.
In the 2024 general election, he was re-elected to the House of Representatives.
Mr. Kaieda stands 182 cm (5′10″) tall.
